The
Zionsville IN Chamber of Commerce (just northwest of Indianapolis) recently announced a new marketing initiative using technology to promote their community. However, several of the community's business owners are not exactly enamored with the plan.

Networking is not like what it used to be
(An Observation in action) December-2009
As we move into the year 2010 and beyond, there is allot to think about and understand as it relates to world of networking and business relationship development.
In fact, let me begin with a shocking statement that should take many of you including my colleagues by surprise.
Networking is DEAD.
And in my opinion, networking as we know it today has been dying a slow death since about 1995.
And,…

You have a lot of information to store and organize for your chamber of commerce or association, but where should you put it? And how much should you invest in a database solution?
First, full disclosure: My Salem Area Chamber of Commerce uses Chamber WebLink Connect. We selected this product because it is, I believe, the highest level of technology customized for membership organizations. But that doesn't mean I recommend this solution for every membership organization.
Determine your organiz…

Thanks to Kyle's advice, we've built our own "Facebook" site for members using the ning platform. You can access it by clicking on the GO ChamberBook link near the top of our website here,
www.owensboro.com/chamber. Nearly 50 members have joined in a little more than a week and we're having a luncheon today to show members how to use it. My staff can barely keep up approving News Shares/blogs and photos that are being uploaded to it.…

They say all good things in life start at the beginning. Sometimes, though, we get pretty far down a certain road before we realize that road isn’t leading exactly where we want to go. Much as we’d prefer to keep moving forward, it might be a better idea to turn around, go back, and make a brand new beginning, using all the lessons we’ve learned on the round trip! This blog is about new beginnings, and how we can move beyond the old ways and the old thinking to create a new reality for ourselves…

Over the past few weeks, I've spent quite a bit of time talking face to face with chamber of commerce executives, both at the American Chamber of Commerce Executives (ACCE) Convention and the Western Association of Chamber Executives (W.A.C.E.) Academy. We've talked about improving retention, increasing new members sales, generating non-dues revenue and more. But by far the hottest topic has been social media.
I find it puzzling that so many chambers of commerce are still "holding off" on using…

Hello, Chamber People! Kyle Sexton, here. I'm the founder of ChamberPeople.com. First, let me just say I'm glad you're part of it. There's been some great additions and improvements to the site in the last couple of months.
The discussion forum is now called Answers & Questions. Discussions usually start with a statement and end with a period. No discussion. But questions begin with question marks and end with answers, hopefully lots of 'em. So now that we've got that figured out, go for it…

The Kyle Chamber of Commerce in Kyle, TX, launched a new feature of it's web site today: ChamberTV. Take a look by
clicking here.
ChamberTV is the name Chamber CEO Ray Hernandez gave to the one- to four-minute videos from Small Business School. The code is easily pasted into any page on your web site, and requires no royalties or fees. Bruce Camber can provide the code for your chamber's web site too. Just…

Hi Chamber Friends:
As members of Congress are headed into a very busy month of town halls and other public forums, I wanted to share with you a great resource for contacting your elected officials with your thoughts on the important issues of health care reform, energy policy, and worksite union organizing efforts. Please take at look at http://recess.voteforbusiness.com/ and feel free to share this site with your members. Thanks!

I get many requests for this letter, which I originally posted on ACCE.org in response to yet another chamber requesting input on a new theme for their membership drive, and although this was way over the top at the time, I look back and laugh. Many others do, too. I hope you see the humor.
And by the way, my friend and valued chamber-colleague Joan Testa (Chamber Development Services) provides a service to chambers to help them PREVENT this scenario, while still helping you recruit new memb…

3.0 is such an appropriate name for this version. Not only is it the third version of an online product I created back in 2003, but it has taken 3 years to get my
Chamber SalesEngine product converted to a systematic, dynamic online video presentation which I can adapt for any chamber or membership organization in the English-speaking world.
Take a look by clicking

It's been said that you can get statistics to say whatever you want them to say. If you're trying to prove a point, you can find or create numerical proof affirming your argument.
For example, I want to make the argument that being a member of my chamber is important, helpful and relevant to my region's businesses whether they attend events and meetings or not. I believe that people who invest their time get a different ROI than those who quietly renew their membership each year. Both receive a…

As I share my technical innovations across the country, I always tell my audiences, "Email me if you want more info." Sometimes they do it right away, and sometimes they wait so long they forgot what they were emailing me about.
I also tell them "Join ChamberPeople.com and learn how online social networking works by actually doing it!" And they do!
One of the things people email me about is this: Hattie Bryant produces and hosts an outstanding program called Small Business School. They sell su…

Chambers of commerce, depending on where you live, sometimes offer a money-back guarantee for your membership. When tied to participation, this seems reasonable. For example, attend 3 events in your first 3 months of membership and if you don't think it will work for you, the chamber will give you your money back.
Chambers of commerce have, for years - decades even, tried to make their offerings more tangible by aligning with retail packaging concepts. 2 months free, free gift certificate, and…
